Smart Solar Systems for Street Lighting

Problem: Street lighting is densely integrated into grid system for major cities; however, this comes at the cost of high energy usage and cost.

Solution: Solar street lights provide a better value for cost, optimum lighting, and a renewable source of energy.

  • Utilities
  • City Municipalities
  • Residents
  • Engineering Teams & Vendors
  • Funding Partners

Next Steps:

  • Talk to city and town municipalities about the benefits
  • Provide a cost benefit analysis
  • Work with existing power companies to adapt existing infrastructure
  • Educate residents on long-term sustainable benefits

CAP2229 Response to Solar Powered Trains: With India’s poverty being so high, mass transport has become a way of life as purchasing vehicles is very costly.  Switching from coal fired trains to solar power would reduce the amount of emissions that populate the very densely populated country.

Robotically Reconfigurable Interiors

Sustainability Problem: Construction Waste

Technology Summary:

Price of real estate is increasing faster than incomes, pushing people and businesses into smaller space. Reconfiguration could help accommodate multiple-use scenarios. This technology uses small robots that are located in this 5-inch space hidden below the floor.  These little robots assemble the cubes one layer at a time, move them to the correct location, and lift them into place. The robots are battery-powered, so they can go back to a charging dock when they’re running low on energy.

  • Residents
  • Businesses
  • Construction Companies
  • Software and Robotic Companies

Technology Deployed:

  • The technology is in a pilot phase and will need to start having more research to reach full efficiency.
  • Find more investors and/or residential and commercial buildings to start testing the product and see if can accommodate their needs.
  • Raise awareness to construction waste and allow for consumers to be knowledgable to make smarter decisions towards long-term sustainability.
  • Take use of incentives to animate the robotics market and drive cost down.

CAP2229 Response to Blog Post – Smart, Connected Elevators/Escalators

Although I think the need to have alerts for service of elevators and escalators will not be as useful, the real value here is the amount of data that can be collected from the amount of users.  Knowing peak times, amount of riders, average stops per floor can help enable efficiency into use and security of buildings.

Drone to Help Pollination

Sustainable Problem: Sustainable Agriculture

Pollinators such as bees and butter flies help produce 75% of the world’s crops by pollination. Unfortunately, many insect pollinators are facing extinction.

Technology:  Drones

Researchers in Japan are testing out drones to be used for pollination. These drones carry pollen from one plant to another allowing them to be pollinated and reproduce without the help of insect pollinators.

  • Farmers
  • Grocery Stores
  • Farmers Markets

Next Steps:

  1. Create awareness about incest extinction and pollination issues.
  2. Continue to perform research on drone capability and technology.
  3. Pilot this technology at local farms, gardens, and parks.
  4. Secure incentives and funding means to produce more pollination drones.

As the world transforms to use more smart technology in their daily lives, this is a important fabric that can analyze data and build databases that help evaluate a persons health.  I believe this technology will change the way people understand their own health and body and move towards a healthier lifestyle with data analytics.

Amazon Patents Plan for Drones to Charge Electric Vehicles while Driving

Sustainable Problem:

As the nations environmental awareness grows towards creating a sustainable future there is a demand for infrastructure that supports and meets the needs of electric vehicles. With a limited amount of electric vehicle charging stations available, Amazon has come up with a concept to that can help meet and or delay infrastructure needs.

Amazon has patented a design to have recharging drones dock on a person’s electric vehicle while driving to give the car a battery charge.

  • Utilities
  • Vehicle Consumers
  • Commuters

Development and Implementation:

  • Create and patent the plan for recharging drones
  • Work with auto manufacturers to collaborate design of recharging technology and capabilty
  • Create awareness of recharging drones which will animate the Electric Vehicle market as more consumers realize they can charge their car from anywhere

Micro-CHP Rein in Ballooning Energy Bills

1. Sustainability Area: Energy

Problem: Lack off efficiency energy use and non-utilized waste heat

2. Technology: Micro-CHP

The application of micro-CHP measures will provide load relief and energy cost savings through distributed power generation

  • Micro-CHP units that are an efficient, low-pressure gas, home appliance-sized fuel cells which provide cost savings to the public, and improve resiliency at critical infrastructure
  • Wall-mounted micro-CHP unit turns 10-25 percent of the gas it burns into electricity, which homeowners can use or sell back to the grid.
  • Micro-CHP usually burn natural gas to run an electrical generator. The combustion of the natural gas creates the waste heat that can be used for space heating.
  • Facilities such as fire and police stations ensure that critical loads continue to operate under all circumstances. Several thousand of our proposed micro-CHP units have been installed in Europe and are operating successfully.

3.  Stakeholders:

  • Residential Buildings
  • Small Business
  • Utilities
  • Rate-Payers

4. Deployment:

  • Leverage existing relationships at NYC Mayor’s Office, DCAS, and NYPA.
  • Outreach to public facilities (FDNY, NYPD, and NYC DOE)
  • Propose project financing through utility incentives to lower price of micro-CHP technology.
