  • Bio-bean is a biofuel that is made from coffee grounds. This technology has been in the process of being deployed with the help of a partnership with Shell.

  • The article explains that by 2020, they aim to have 400 charging stations across Europe. The goal of this is to increase the possibility for long-distance travel.
  • Through a partnership with Tank & Rast, Circle K, and OMV, 20 stations will be up and running this year. 100 stations will be ready for use next year.

  • As commerce becomes more digital, packaging and shipping waste is also increasing. RePack is a new way to ship and return items. The packaging is renewable and can be used repeatedly.
  • If the customer does not need to return what they bought, they can just put the package back in the mail and it will be returned to RePack.
  • When checking out, customers are prompted with the choice to use the different packings. The customers are incentivized to return the packaging to RePack through a discount. The company has created a coalition of companies where once returned they can use the discount at all the different stores.
  • They have found that customers spend more than 30% at the store. It also helps companies reduce their environmental impact and become more circular.

  • Lab are historically wasteful discarding over 10 billion pounds of plastic. Other waste streams include hazardous waste and gloves.
  • This label can help labs to reduce their environmental impact while still being able to perform their studies.

Background on Technology

  • VOLT Smart Yarn is highly conductive yarn that can be used in commercial sewing machines and be used with other fabrics. This product was explained in a press release by VOLT’s parent company Supreme Corporation.
  • The yarn is about the size of a human hair and contains about 4 wires with in it.
  • The press release and other supporting videos and articles explain that the primary use for the yarn is for body armor, more specifically for the police. The technology can be used as a sensor to notify nearby police stations when there has been impact, if a police officer is lying down or standing up, their vital signs, and their current location.
  • Other uses include turning on and off other devices or controlling the volume.
  • VOLT explains they want the fabric to be used for other reasons besides safety and is challenging the public to think of other ways to use it.

Kelp as a Fiber

  • AlgiKnit is a company that make a new fiber made from kelp. They are looking to replace oil based fibers or other man-made fibers.
  • Oil based fibers, like polyester, are not sustainable as they not only rely on oil but also create micro-plastics which are currently polluting the ocean and contaminating the food chain.
  • Kelp is easy to grow and can grow quickly, even faster than bamboo. Kelp farming can also help to support farmers and give them a steadier income. Kelp farms also improve the health of the ocean.
  • Recently won the National Geographic “Chasing Genius Challenge” and are working with the Clinton Global Initiative. They are based out of the Fashion Institute of Technology.

New Tool for Fashion Supply Chains

Technology:

 

“Connected” is a service for data and supply chain transparency that through a partnership with Control Union and H&M. The goal of this technology is to help fashion companies reach their goals of transparent supply chains and responsible sourcing.

Relation to Sustainability Problem:

The supply chains in the appeal industry are complex and spread all over the world. This complexity leads to sustainability challenges. For example, if a company wants to implement different sustainability initiatives through their supply chain they have no way of knowing which parts of their supply chain are impacting communities and the environment.  This technology helps companies to analyze that information and make informed decisions.

Technology Implementation:

This technology is already being used by H&M in their viscose suppliers. The next steps are to expand this to other supply chains within H&M. Once the technology has started to be utilized, the data collected must be analyzed and used to make more informed decisions. For example, they could work to reduce their environmental and social impact in specific parts of their supply chain that is not up to their standards. Another part of supply chain transparency is giving this information to the public and their customers so they can also make informed decisions.
